02 Methodology

Every dot on the map is a place from a Google Places crawl of the region. Dragging the otter runs a one-to-many Dijkstra over an OSM road graph entirely in your browser — no servers are consulted in the making of your food frontier.

Time is a free-flow driving estimate: road-class speeds, no traffic, no parking, no queue at the counter. The search stops at two hours of driving — a place beyond that reads "no route found within 2 h". Quality score is the place's Google rating scaled to 100 — a rating-derived proxy, not a taste, freshness, or consistency measurement. Unrated places cannot be charted, and the Min ratings control drops listings backed by fewer ratings than you choose — it starts at a minimum of five ratings, which you can relax back to Any; a rating count is a sample size, not proof a rating is reliable. The Pareto frontier marks places that are not dominated: nothing else is at least as fast and at least as well-rated, and better in at least one of the two.

Data is cached per region and only the region you pick is downloaded. Restaurant attributes come from the listings themselves; we do not invent ratings, hours, wait times, or certifications.
